What is link juice?
The term 'Link Juice' is widely used within the SEO industry to describe the equity that is passed along a hyperlink from one website to another and is said to be first coined by SEO Consultant, Greg Boser.
The process of gaining link juice involves link building i.e. increasing the number of links from high-quality websites to your website, and is the most important aspect of search engine optimisation. Link building is also the most time-consuming and laborious task webmasters face when promoting their websites.
Why is link building so important?
Around 90% of Googles algorithm is weighted towards the number and quality of links pointing to your website and Google clearly state:
“In general, webmasters can improve the rank of their sites by increasing the number of high-quality sites that link to their pages.”
Source: Google Webmaster Guidelines.
Generally, good websites link to other good websites and search engines rely on this democratic nature of the web to determine the importance of a web page, treating each incoming link as a vote of confidence. The quality of links is also a factor, and links from websites that are themselves ‘important’ carry more weight.
The more 'important' Google thinks a web page is, the higher it will rank for its keywords.
